Oct 13, 1970

Oct 13, 1970 - Canada looks more like a police state than a democracy eight days after the kidnapping of British Trade Commissioner James Cross.  On Parliament Hill a reporter confronts Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau:  “What is it with all these army tanks and guns around here?”  With army tanks and men in full gear, as Trudeau boosted national security.  But the military’s prescience makes some Canadians feel a whole lot more insecure.  How far will the prime minister extend law and order ?

Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau

"Well, I am trying to put Quebec in its place — and the place of Quebec is in Canada, nowhere else."

Speech on the Quebec separatist movement (25 June 1968), exact quote take from footage as seen in "Pierre Elliott Trudeau Memoirs" (27 Jan 2009)
